Nissokone offers a variety of camp experiences that you can purchase in 1 or 2 week Session blocks. Our Traditional Residence Camp offers a variety of camp activities that take advantage of our incredible outdoor camp complex and adjacent state park. Adventure Specialty Camps provide additional opportunities with a special focus (such as Ranch Camp or Adventure Specialty Camp).

Ranch Camp

Boys and Girls entering grades 6-11

In addition to all your favorite activities at Camp Nissokone, Ranch Campers get to “live the ranch life.” Campers will be doing daily chores to care for the horses, riding, studying and improving their equestrian skills to move to the next level in horsemanship. About half of each day is spent at the barn or on horseback, so bring your boots!

Ranch Camp includes:

• Learning about horse care

• Lessons to advance your skill level
• Plus the regular Camp activities like ropes course, archery, waterfront, and more

Our expert YMCA Equestrian Staff will guide you through the “Neckerchief Program” as you improve your skills, learn with those at your level and make new friends.

Adventure Camp Week

For campers entering grades 6-11
Adventure Camps are designed for older campers who are looking for the maximum amount of excitement and adding the extreme element to Nissokone. Combining advanced versions of paintball, mountain boarding and rock climbing, campers will also be spending a night at the State campground camping out in tents and cooking over a fire!

If that’s not enough, add the Waterski/Wakeboard option and hone your skills and learn new tricks on Lake Van Ettan.

Day Camp at Nissokone

Boys & Girls entering Grades K-6
Day Camp at Nissokone is a gentle introduction to Summer Camp and a welcome option for parents looking for quality daily programs. Each day of camp is filled with excitement and new experiences. The daily schedule provides a variety of individual skill building and group activities. Day Campers have a chance to choose age-appropriate skill programs during the morning and spend the afternoon in supervised activities with their camp groups.

In addition to the great activities, Breakfast and Lunch are served daily. The program day begins at 9:00am and concludes at 4:00pm.

Family Camp at Nissokone

All Ages of the Family
Family accommodations are in “classic camp cabins” with bathrooms and hot showers. Comfortable for 8-10 people with separate sleeping areas for up to 2 families. Hearty home-cooked meals are served three times daily in the main lodge and will make the whole family smile.

Activities include: horseback riding, sailing, boating, the high ropes course, climbing wall, skateboarding, arts & crafts, campfire programs, paintball, zany meals, sports, games and more.

• Adults (age 13 & up) $149 by 4/30 or $155 after 5/1
• Children (age 3-12) $74 by 4/30 or $79 after 5/1

*Included in the fee are 3 nights’ lodging, 8 meals and camp activities. Check-in time is 4-6pm; check out time 2pm.

Memorial Day Family Camp

May 28-31
Start the summer off right on the shores of Lake Van Ettan. This has activities for the entire family, great food and singing by the campfire. Bring your fishing pole and the lounge chair.

Labor Day Family Camp

Sept. 3-6
Summer ends too quickly in Northern Michigan and this is the last hurrah. Activities include boat rides, inner tubing, sailing, horseback riding, climbing wall and the high ropes course. Perhaps the best part of all is the sunrise over the Lake.

Nissokone Corn Roasts

July 31 and Sept. 4

Visit for a day to soak in the Camp air, visit old friends and enjoy supper and corn roasted over the open fire. The Corn Roast is for camp alumni, family and friends. Sing camp songs, view historical displays and get to know others from different generations.

Leader In Training (L.I.T.)

Boys & Girls entering grade 10
The LIT program is for teens who want to increase their leadership ability and travel through some of the best wilderness areas that Michigan has to offer. Camp activities, leadership development exercises and a 3-day canoe trip down the scenic AuSable River will create an unforgettable camp experience.

LIT combines group building, problem solving and goal setting with environmental awareness and outdoor leadership skills. Your camper will return home more confident and ready for new challenges.

Counselors In Training (C.I.T.)

Boys & Girls entering grades 11 & 12
Counselors are the key to a successful Camp program. Many parents ask, “where do you find the camp counselors?” The simple answer is that we grow our own! Previous YMCA campers make the best staff.

The CIT program is the beginning of this important journey. The CIT program consists of 3 main components: education, team building and real life experience.

CIT’s work on problem solving, communication skills and child development concepts. Cabin group dynamics and behavioral interactions are studied prior to the CIT’s getting firsthand experience in the cabin under the supervision of the staff.
